Man crossing street killed by car in Temple

A man died last weekend after he was hit by a car as he tried to cross a street midblock Friday night, police said.

Michael Wallace, 55, was struck by an eastbound Dodge sedan about 9:30 p.m. as he tried to cross West Adams Avenue about 100 yards east of Apache Drive, officials said.

They said that the accident happened in a poorly lit area of the curved roadway and that the driver did not see Wallace. Wallace was taken to Scott and White Hospital where he died Saturday morning, police said. No one else was injured.

Driver sought in fatal hit-and-run in Bastrop County

Officials are asking the public for information on a fatal hit-and-run early Sunday near Elgin.

An unknown vehicle was traveling south on Old McDade Road when it struck 25-year-old Juvencio Martir, who was walking south on the street, near Natures Way. Martir was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin, where he died.

State troopers are asking anyone with information to call 512-424-7391.

Truck hits, kills woman on street

A 64-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when she was hit by a vehicle while crossing a street in Northeast Austin.

The woman was crossing Cameron Road mid-block near St. Johns Avenue on Friday at 7:36 p.m. when she was struck by a 1999 GM pickup in the southbound right lane.  She was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.

Neither alcohol nor speed seemed to be factors in the incident and the pickup driver remained at the scene.

Man killed in hit and run

Austin police said Monday that 60- year-old Robert Macklin was killed when a vehicle hit him about 5 p.m. Saturday as he crossed Dessau Road at Rundberg Lane.

Police said Sunday that a Chevrolet pickup was driving north on Dessau when it struck Macklin. But officials said Monday that further investigation has found that a different car hit Macklin first.

Macklin was struck by a car, which stopped but then fled the scene, officials said. The second vehicle, a Chevrolet pickup driven by Israel Hernandez Nieva, struck Macklin as he lay in the road, police said. Hernandez-Nieva, 27, was charged Sunday with driving while intoxicated.

Anyone with information about the in cident is asked to call detectives at 974-4506. It was Austin’s 61st traffic fatality of 2009.

Pedestrian struck, killed by car in Pflugerville

Department of Public Safety officials have identified a woman who was struck by a car and killed Tuesday morning in Pflugerville as 63-year-old Mary Rodriguez Valdez.

A DPS dispatcher said Valdez and another person were crossing FM 1825 near Vision Drive about 6 a.m. when she was struck by a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant.

The dispatcher said Valdez and the other pedestrian, who was not injured, were both wearing dark clothing and walking in an unlighted area of the road.

No charges have been filed.

Pedestrian hit by 18-wheeler on RM 620 dies

An 18-wheeler struck and killed a pedestrian Tuesday morning on RM 620 near Quinlan Park Road.

The identity of the victim, who appeared to be about 30 years old, was not released, Travis County sheriff’s Capt. Art Cardenas said.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the man walking on the side of the road about 8 a.m., and the victim’s car was found parked nearby. It appears the man stepped into the roadway, where he was struck at highway speed by a westbound 18-wheeler, Cardenas said.

The truck driver stopped and notified authorities, he said, and no charges were filed in connection with the incident.

Fort Hood soldier dies in pedestrian accident

Robert Walden age 25, a Fort Hood soldier, died Friday night after being struck by a car when he attempted to cross Clear Creek Road at about 10:45 p.m.

He was struck by a Mazda Tribute SUV traveling north in the outside lane and taken to Darnall Army Medical Center.

The driver of the Mazda has not been charged.

Pedestrian killed in North Austin

An 83-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning when he was hit by a car while trying to cross Burnet Road at Richcreek Road. William Boykin, who was using a walker, was crossing Burnet when the light turned green, and he was hit by a Honda Civic, police said. It was dark at the time of the incident and the driver told police that he did not see the man until the crash, police said. No charges are expected to be filed.

SUV kills woman in downtown Austin

A woman who was jogging on a sidewalk near downtown was killed Friday afternoon when an SUV struck her while backing out of a private driveway, Austin police said.

Witnesses told police that she was jogging in the 200 block of West 15th Street, between Colorado and Lavaca streets.

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services took her to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

The incident is still under investigation.

Girl in Temple seriously hury by SUV

A 5-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries after she was hit by an SUV Tuesday morning.

Alyson Moreno was taken to Scott & White Memorial Hospital with injuries to her head, face and upper and lower body, Temple police said.  Moreno was with a group of children crossing East Adams Avenue at North 20th Street at 7 a.m. to get to a bus stop, police said.

Moreno, a student at Garcia Elementary School, was struck by a SUV driven by Veronica Magana, 26, of Rogers, police said.  No other children were hurt in the crash.  No charges were file investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
