Man arrested in hit-and-run

Austin police have charged David Delacerda, 30, who is accused of hitting a construction worker last week and leaving the scene, according to an arrest affidavit.  The worker died.

Delacerda was arrested after he was released from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

The wreck happened about 1:30 a.m. in the 11400 block of southbound I-35, police said.  Police said a dark-color sport utility vehicle ran through a marked construction zone near Onion Creek Parkway and hit the worker, identified as Fontino Cortes-Cruz, 36.

Cortes-Cruz was part of a crew that was repaving the interstate and had been laying reflective tabs on the highway when he was hit, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Hays County sheriff’s deputies found a burned SUV outside of Kyle about 4 a.m. Austin police said, and shortly afterward, police received a call from South Austin Hospital taht a man with burns on his body had checked into the hospital.

Delacerda, who was released from the burn center on Friday, is charged with felony failure to stop and render aid, which carries a maximum of 10 years in prison upon conviction.

He is in Bexar County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

Worker Killed in I-35 hit-and-run

A construction worker was killed in a crash on southbound Interstate 35 about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police said a dark-colored SUV ran through a clearly marked construction zone and hit Fontino Cortes-Cruz, 36, in the 11400 block of 1-35 near Onion Creek Parkway. The driver fled; nobody else was injured, police said.
The SUV drove south after the crash, and Austin police notified Hays County officials to be on the lookout for the vehicle, Austin police Sgt. Richard Stresing said. Hays County sheriff’s deputies found a burned dark-colored SUV outside of Kyle about 4 a.m., Stresing said, and shortly afterward, police received a call from South Austin Hospital that a man with burns on his body had checked into the hospital.
Police are interviewing him as a person of interest in the crash, Stresing said.

1 dead, 2 injured on I-35

A man died and two other people suffered minor injuries after a vehicle rollover in front of a South Austin shopping center Sunday.

Austin police said the indicent happened about 6:00 p.m. in the 9800 block of Interstate 35 in front of Southpark Meadows shopping center.

According to Sgt. Philip Linsalata, witnesses told police that a white Toyota Avalon was traveling southbound on the I-35 frontage road when it veered into a grassy median and rolled over several times, rolling onth the southbound lanes of I-35.

The driver, whose name and age were not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Two passengers were hospitalized.

Nine people involved in Interstate 35 crash

Four people were hurt in a wreck Sunday on an Interstate 35 frontage road, including two children who at first were though to be critically injured.  Authorities said te accident on the northbound frontage road near East 11th Street involved a minivan and a truck.
